San Diego Fire: Evacuation Orders Lifted, Forward Spread Stopped
A fire that broke out in San Diego's Rancho Bernardo community on Wednesday morning has been contained, and all evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted as of 3:15 p.m.
Fire Details
The fire, dubbed the “Center Fire,” or sometimes referred to as the “Bernardo Fire,” was reported near Bernardo Center Drive and Camino Del Norte, close to Interstate 15. The blaze threatened homes in the area, but firefighters were able to stop its forward spread at four acres around 11 a.m. The fire ultimately burned a total of seven acres.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) received the initial call around 8:55 a.m., and the first firefighters arrived shortly after 9 a.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Evacuations and Road Closures
Evacuation orders were issued for neighborhoods from Dove Canyon Road to the west, Camino Del Norte to the north, I-15 to the east, and Carmel Mountain Road to the south. Evacuation warnings were extended as far south as Black Mountain Open Space Park, with the western and northern borders marked by Camino Del Sur and the eastern boundary near Dove Canyon Road.
A temporary evacuation center was set up at the At Home store and parking lot located at 12080 Carmel Mountain Rd.
Road closures remain in effect on Camino Del Norte as of 3:15 p.m. Other closures reported earlier in the day included I-15 at Camino Del Norte, Bernardo Center and Camino Del Norte, Paseo Montanoso at Avenida De Los Lobos and Camino Del Norte.
Casualties and Damage
At least one person was taken to the hospital with burn injuries.
The fire caused damage to homes and other structures in the area, but the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
